“Regenerating Democracy: Capabilities, Commons, Care” (Theme)

Université Gaston Berger (Saint-Louis, Senegal) • December 1–6, 2025


A joint initiative of the Democracy Innovation Foundation, Global Africa, and the Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF), the Junior Researcher's Institute (JRI) aims to foster the emergence of a new generation of researchers on the continent, capable of contributing to the reinvention of democracy through African archives, fieldwork, and practices.


The School mobilizes three key notions—capabilities, commons, and the ethics of care—to rethink democratic forms that are more just, inclusive, and attentive to the living world.


Who is the YSS for?

  • Doctoral students, early-career PhDs, and young researchers in the humanities and social sciences, law, STS, development studies, etc.

  • With a strong interest in substantive democracy, the commons, social and ecological justice, or public policies in Africa.


Format

  • Residential in Saint-Louis (Senegal), December 1–6, 2025

  • Workshops, masterclasses, writing labs, methodological sessions, and field clinics.
