Sylvain Landry Birane FAYE is a full professor of sociology and anthropology at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar (Senegal) and the director of the Laboratory of Sociology, Anthropology, and Psychology (LASAP-ETHOS). Specialized in the socio-anthropology of health, he conducts research on the evaluation of health policies and systems in Africa, as well as on strategic communication planning for behavior change related to maternal, child, adolescent, and youth health. He also has research expertise in nutrition and food security, using qualitative methods and an ecological perspective to integrate social, cultural, and local dimensions into analyses of dietary practices and interventions. He has extensive experience in the anthropology of emerging and re-emerging epidemics in Africa, including Ebola and COVID-19 in the DRC, Mali, and Guinea, as well as Mpox and Rift Valley Fever in Senegal. His current work also focuses on the ethics of emerging technologies in African contexts, addressing the social, cultural, and ethical dimensions of AI in public health, data governance, algorithmic justice, and issues of gender and inclusion.
