Jacky Bouju is an anthropologist with a doctorate in ethnology and comparative sociology from the University Paris X Nanterre and the École Pratique des Hautes Études, Section V, in Paris. After teaching for two years in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia) and eight years at the University of Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), he has been a professor and researcher at the University of Aix-Marseille since 1991, where he created a professional Master's program in applied anthropology for development. He is also a member of the laboratory at the Institute of African Worlds (IMAF UMR 8171) at CNRS and IRD, where he served as deputy director for six years.

He manages international university collaborations with institutions such as the Institute of Human Security in Ouagadougou (Burkina Faso), the Department of Anthropology at the University of N'Djamena (Chad), the University of Bangui (Central African Republic), the University of Lomé (Togo), and the Catholic University of Yaoundé (Cameroon). He was the editor of the online version of the journal *Anthropologie et développement* (formerly *Bulletin de l’APAD*). Since 2014, he has been co-editor of the online journal *caTchas*, the Cahiers tchadiens des sciences humaines. He is also the President of the Scientific Council of the Groupement d’Intérêt Scientifique des Études Africaines at CNRS.

His current research focuses on issues of extreme violence in West Africa.
