Dr. Albert Gautier NDIONE, Socio-Anthropologist Associate Professor (UCAD). A pioneer in drug research (heroin and cocaine) in Senegal, Albert Gautier NDIONE is a leading figure in contemporary socio-anthropology. Since 2011, this passionate researcher has been exploring the complex mechanism of social construction surrounding the image of drug users in the Senegalese society.
His innovative ethnographic approach has led him to decode the influence of media through various forms of cultural expression—from song lyrics to film scripts, as well as traditional and digital press articles. This multidimensional perspective has enabled him to shed light on stigmatization processes and collective representations that shape public perceptions of psychoactive substance users.
Prior to joining Cheikh Anta Diop University (UCAD) in Dakar, Dr. NDIONE honed his expertise at the TransVIHMI International Joint Research Unit of the Institute of Research for Development (IRD), where he developed a unique transdisciplinary perspective.
Recruited in 2021 by UCAD's Department of Sociology as a media sociologist, his academic excellence was quickly recognized by his peers. Just two years after joining the university, he was included on the Eligibility List for Assistant Professorship (LAFMA) of the African and Malagasy Council for Higher Education (CAMES).
Now an Associate Professor at UCAD, Albert Gautier NDIONE continues to conduct research at the intersection of sociological and anthropological approaches, helping to train a new generation of researchers in the socio-anthropology of media and deepening the understanding of social dynamics related to drug use in West Africa.
