01 β€” Our model

A Diamond Journal

Global Africa is a diamond open access publisher. All articles are available online for free upon release, in full text, at no cost to the reader and without any associated processing fees (Article Processing Charge - APC) for the authors or their institutions, in accordance with the Diamond Open Access publishing model. By removing the financial barriers for both authors and readers and offering a high-quality multilingual journal, we hope to significantly increase the share of African contributions to global research.

We believe that not only can open science promote multilingualism but also rapidly put an end to the epistemic injustice affecting research in the Global South.

02 β€” Why it matters

Epistemic Justice & the Global South

Most academic publications remain inaccessible to researchers in the Global South. This is particularly true for researches in Sub-Saharan Africa, for whom it is also quite difficult to publish in reputable international journals. The main reasons for this epistemic injustice are, among others:

πŸ’°
Subscription & Publication Costs
Prohibitive subscription fees for academic libraries and high APCs in traditional journals create structural barriers for researchers in the Global South.
πŸ”€
Preeminence of English
The dominance of English to the detriment of other languages, especially African languages, marginalizes a vast body of scholarly work and lived experience.
πŸ’»
The Digital Divide
Unequal access to digital infrastructure and connectivity limits the ability of researchers in many African countries to participate in global scholarly conversations.
πŸ›
Lack of Institutional Resources
Universities, academic libraries, and research bodies in African countries are often under-resourced, making access to international journals particularly challenging.

Open Access offers an opportunity to reduce these imbalances in the academic publishing market and democratize the production, dissemination, and access to knowledge. We subscribe to the open access philosophy and commitment to turn knowledge into a genuine public good by publishing and archiving the findings of researchers from the Global South and the Global North in free open access online journals and free digital archives as defined by the Berlin Agreement in 2003.

03 β€” Our commitments

Our Open Access Principles

Global Africa's open access policy is built on four interconnected dimensions of openness:

01
Openness to Contributors
We are open to contributors from all disciplinary and intellectual backgrounds β€” researchers, practitioners, and intellectuals from the African continent, its diaspora, and beyond.
02
Openness to Themes
Opening towards themes whose paradigms will be rethought β€” from objects to interfaces, or science fronts. We deliberately seek out emerging and underexplored research questions.
03
Openness to Users
Openness to users of the knowledge produced β€” actors in civil society, activists, political decision-makers, and the private sector β€” ensuring research reaches those who can use it.
04
Openness to Languages
Openness to the African languages mobilized as languages of research and work. Global Africa publishes in French, English, Arabic and Swahili β€” and aims to expand this over time.
Our conviction
"The conviction of Global Africa is that these openings will be all the more legitimate if they are based on knowledge produced and validated through the best academic standards."
04 β€” How it works

The Diamond Open Access Model

The Diamond Open Access model is a publishing approach where neither authors nor readers pay any fees. The costs of publishing are entirely absorbed by the journal's institutional funders and partners. This model stands in contrast to both traditional subscription journals (where readers pay) and Gold Open Access (where authors pay APCs).

Diamond Open Access
Global Africa's model
No fees for readers. No fees for authors. Content freely available immediately upon publication. Funded by institutional partners (UGB, IRD, AFD, consortium).
Traditional Subscription
Readers pay
Access restricted to subscribers. Libraries pay high fees. Authors may publish for free but readers cannot access without subscription.
Gold Open Access
Authors pay (APC)
Content is freely available to readers, but authors or their institutions must pay Article Processing Charges, sometimes several thousand euros.
Green Open Access
Self-archiving
Authors deposit their work in an open repository, but the published version may remain behind a paywall for a period (embargo).

Berlin Declaration (2003): Global Africa subscribes to the principles of the Berlin Agreement on Open Access to Knowledge in the Sciences and Humanities, which defines open access as providing a free, irrevocable, worldwide, right of access to, and a license to copy, use, distribute, transmit and display the work publicly.

06 β€” Preservation

Long-term Archiving

Global Africa is committed to the long-term preservation and accessibility of all published content. The journal's archiving strategy ensures that articles remain available and discoverable for future generations of researchers, regardless of changes in technology or publishing platforms.

πŸ—„
Digital Preservation
All published articles are archived in permanent digital repositories to ensure long-term availability and prevent loss of scholarly content.

DOI Assignment
Each article is assigned a Digital Object Identifier (DOI) to ensure persistent linking and citability. DOI numbers enable unambiguous identification and citation of articles.

Indexing & Discoverability
Global Africa articles are indexed in major academic databases and repositories to ensure maximum discoverability by researchers worldwide. See our Referencing & Indexing page for the full list.
